rev:text	I spent the week of Thanksgiving in Phoenix visiting family, so naturally I wanted to try some of the new craft beers being produced in Phoenix. I moved away from Arizona in 2005 and at that time the craft beer scene was as dry as [insert name of any wash/creek/stream in the Phoenix area here]. I currently live in one of the better known small town craft beer havens, and I routinely visit one of the others up north, so I've become a little bit spoiled when it comes to good beer. I will not name the other local brewers that I tried prior to visiting Fate, but I won't hesitate to say that I was becoming very disappointed in what Phoenix had to offer in the way of craft beer. Unoriginal, uninspired, overly hopped IPAs; unoriginal, uninspired, flat pale ales; and drab, flavorless Hefes everywhere. I had one of the worst Ambers I've ever had the displeasure of putting in my mouth. I tried quite a few on draft, some from bottles, and some from cans...all less than impressive. I had read good things about Fate and as fate would have it (see what I did there?), the last night of my trip allowed me, my sexy beer nerd fiancee, and my sister to make a trip to the brewery. Fate completely crushed every other brewer I tried while in town. I started with a flight (Irish Red, Oatmeal Pale, Oatmeal Double IPA, Candy Bar Milk Stout, and a barrel aged double stout), all of them were flavorful, well-crafted, and easy to drink. I went with a full pour of the Oatmeal Pale, it was that good. I drank it while eating my delicious wood-fired pizza, it complimented perfectly. For dessert, I went with a full pour of the barrel aged double stout. It was definitely the winner of the night for me; aromatic, full-bodied, perfect balance of roast and sweet with just enough of a whiskey kick at the end to prove it was barrel aged. It was surprisingly smooth for the high ABV. Bottom line, if you truly love beer that is well made, tastes like it should, and won't leave you wishing you had just ordered a water and saved the $5-6, you must go to Fate. They clearly know what they are doing and are producing the best beer I had while visiting the Valley.
