Yes! Finally a fresh new concept that is NOT cupcakes. Be sure to check out their website because some donuts are only offered on certain days of the week.
Once you walk into Jelly Modern you get a wonderful whiff of sweetness. The decor is very modern with a clean crisp white look. There is plenty of room for people to move around and check out the display case of donuts and sit down to eat. Behind the display is a huge sign displaying the costs which I found inconvenient to read as I am quite short.
A single donut is $2.25/ea and is about twice the size of a Tim Hortons donut. Definitely something you can share with someone or eat alone if you have a sweet tooth. For the casual donut eater like myself, I highly recommend you get a sample platter of 3 bite donuts ($1.95/ea or Jelly Sampler - one of each - for $24.95). You can try a variety of flavors and I personally think three bites of any one of those donuts is more than enough to taste the flavours while satisfying your sweet tooth.
Kudos to the different flavours, but I just found the donuts to be average. It was exciting with the first bite but gradually fizzled especially with the sweet ones. The dough is not too chewy and tough but it wasn't as light and fluffy as it could have been. Majority of their donuts (except the cake ones) are 'raised' which is a whole donut with a slight dip in the middle for a dab of filling. I was hoping for filled donuts =(
I decided to try out 8 different 3 bite donuts: Classic Jelly, Lemon Curd, Maple Bacon, Coconut, Peanut Butter Cup, S'mores, Peanut Butter Cup, Salty Carmel, and their seasonal of Chocolate Expresso. It was a hit and miss..some donuts were way too sweet while others had a well balanced, delicate flavour.
If you don't have a huge sweet tooth I highly recommend the Classic Jelly donut with homemade strawberry jelly. It is dipped in a vanilla glaze, but the sweetness is balanced out with the tartness of the jelly. The Coconut was only OK; it was light with a delicate coconut milk center filling. If you love Peanut Butter then you will enjoy the Peanut Butter Cup donut with an amazing fluffy and light tasting peanut cream filling. The seasonal Chocolate Expresso donut wasn't too sweet and had enough expresso flavour in it to distinguish it.
I thought the Lemon Curd donut was too sweet; the lemon curd definitely wasn't tart enough. Then there is the unique Maple Bacon donut which didn't live up to my expectations. This donut is OVERLY SWEET it's sickening. There just wasn't enough bacon bits on top (probably a pinch or so) to properly showcase its intended sweet-savoury flavour profile. If you like salty carmel then the Salty Carmel Donut is perfect for you. When you bit into it, there is a strong caramel flavour and then a kick of saltiness at the end. I was expecting a burst of filling inside but all I got was an overly sweet donut that lacked oomf.
Overall, Jelly Modern is worth at least a visit if you haven't already been. It's something new to try, but it just didn't live up to my expectations. I will probably go back to try some of the other flavours but I won't expect anything spectacular since some of donuts fell short.
