| - I had heard about Honey Salt for quite some time and finally decided to give it a shot. It's an adorable local restaurant with a shabby chic sort of vibe. Luckily I arrived pretty early in the evening because they got quite busy towards the end of my dinner.
I was eager to try some of the seemingly vegan friendly options listed on their online menu, but none of the things I wanted were available and/or actually vegan. The server I had was really friendly and seemed to believe I could order whatever and the chef would ensure it would be vegan. This was not the case.
I started with the shishito peppers and was informed the portion would be quite large. They were really good peppers, but were under seasoned and the portion absolutely could not be described as large. Due to the steep price, I refrained from ordering another. For my entree, the server suggested I allow the chef to create a spaghetti squash based pasta. This sounded great so I obliged. I was thoroughly let down when a sloppy plate of severely undercooked squash arrived with some dried out artichokes. This is all that was in the so called pasta. Need I say more?
I had to return the "pasta" and order something else. I would also like to mention as an Italian, this couldn't possibly pass as pasta. At this point, my mom who was my dinner guest, had finished her pizza. I still had not received the quinoa dish to replace my dismal squash entree. The quinoa dish was at least edible, although I would NEVER order it again.
Overall, I was pretty disappointed. Their food is grossly overpriced (at least for veggie dishes) and for having what appeared to be 4+ Chefs (not line cooks) working, pretty sad. They could definitely use some new talent in my opinion, which is pretty biased due to several close friends. I am fortunate to know several very highly regarded Chefs that may have forever thrown off my palette so that mediocre food just isn't acceptable. I was also married to a Chef for 9 years, that could also have skewed my opinion.
All in all, this is a nice local spot and may even be great when eating meat and other living creatures and their by-products. What do I know, I'm just a vegan environmental policy advocate. Try it out for yourself! The cute vibe and emphasis on locally raised agriculture is enough to warrant a visit.
