| - Fun event for learning how to evaluate art for collecting! We were welcomed by Lauren and Yelp crew and invited to enjoy crudités, cookies, and drinks (wine, beer, soda) while mingling and looking at the art at this local Cowan's Auctions venue. Carrie, our art expert/hostess for the night, then showed us various pieces of furniture, bronze, painted, and print art and discussed ways to evaluate their age, provenance and value. I never knew black light was so useful for assessing repairs to oil paintings and porcelain! She also encouraged us to pick up and look at pieces from all sides (esp back of paintings and bottoms of pieces) and ask the auction house (or seller) about taking prints out of frames or pulling back upholstery on furniture. We then walked around while Carrie discussed various types of niche art recently represented--Americana, pewterware, Chinese porcelain, and duck decoys.
This was a great introduction to types of collectible art and how a novice might go about assessing art for sale. I'm not quite ready to head to an art auction, but I will definitely have a different approach for my next visit to an antique shop or estate sale.
