Whenever I get a craving for fried chicken or catfish like my North Carolina-born grandmother used to make, I head to this place (so incredibly grateful they are in my 'hood!). Both dishes are homemade, the side dishes, too! (no canned yams here! You can see the print on the yams where the skin's been removed and taste the brown sugar and butter baked in.) The cornbread is crumbly and delicious. You can taste the hints of butter in the crust and the portions are generous, but not embarrassingly so. They really get the right way to fry chicken (if you've only had fast food chicken, just drop what you're doing now and head over to Off Da Hook!) The skin is crispy, not too salty and the meat underneath tender and juicy (not dry!!).
Soul food is about so much more than just the taste of the food. It's the hospitality and warmth of the cooks, the way they make you feel like you're at home. Everyone here is welcoming (and I sincerely appreciate the old school R&B coming from the sound system.)
I truly hope this place has a long run here in Phoenix.
