We went because I had read they have been awarded best fish and chips several years in a row and we are always on the quest for good ones. We have not navigated downtown Phoenix before, so figuring out parking was a little tricky for us. However it was nice to discover metered street parking is free on the weekends. We stopped for an early supper before heading back to Flag. We weren't super hungry so we ordered the pretzel appetizer and split the fish and chips. The server didn't seem annoyed by the split and said he would bring an extra plate. So that was nice. The pretzels were piping hot and fresh. We got a cheese sauce and yellow mustard for dipping. They were bread stick shaped and you get three. The entree came with 3 nice sized pieces of fish, a big pile of fries, and cole slaw. It was perfect for sharing or good for one hungry person. Not a bad deal for $14. The fish had the perfect light and crispy beer batter we prefer. The fish was your basic flaky cod. Seemed fresh. The chips were your basic French fries. Tasty but not remarkable. The cole slaw was fine but not our favorite. Had a weird sweetness and was not crisp. Maybe made the day before! Service was friendly. Atmosphere was your basic bar and grill with a vague pub feel about it. We were there at a weird time so not many people there. PHX doesn't seem to have a booming after hours in their downtown. It is close to the sports arena and Orpheum theater so I can see it being a popular destination when something is going on there. I also suspect they get a decent lunch and happy hour crowd during the week
