| - I just can't thank Dr. Guttenplan enough!!! Two weeks ago I experienced an acute food allergy reaction and ended up in ER barley able to breath. Having never experienced before, I feel for those who have and hope I never have to again, and so thankful I made it! Yet, the symptoms of my throat tight, hard to swallow, gagging on food and even fluids have continued for the past few weeks as the allergen passes through my system, causing severe anxiety. Today I saw Dr. Guttenplan, and not only did he verify my symptoms are "real" and from the attack, he put me at ease they will get better with time and he will watch over me as I recover. He also did something so wonderful and extremely compassionate for me! See I'm new 5 months to AZ and don't have friends or a support base yet. My boyfriend is a real sweetheart who was with me at the time did a great job to get to ER in time and care for me after. But he has his own stresses surrounding, as scary for him and prefers I don't keep bringing up. I don't blame him. That and others saying, well you're fine now you can stop having anxiety, and me trying to pressure myself to "be" fine, has compounded my anxiety as I relive the experience, because the symptoms are still taking place. Fast-forward - Dr. Guttenplan entered the treatment room professional, pleasant so kind and caring. He took time listening and validated my real symptoms, feelings in such a wonderful compassionate way, I actually cried with relief. And he didn't stop there! He listened so intently with care that he helped me discover something. I was educated that it's normal to have PTSD symptoms from such a traumatic allergic event. And given I am a domestic violence survivor, though over 20 years ago, the sensations of feeling strangled and not able to breath from the allergy reaction, can bring up subconscious anxiety from those past events. It was like a light bulb went on. I'm not crazy!!! I've been trying so hard since the allergic reaction to ignore, push past, say I'm better when not, that it's been so exhausting to deal with causing tremendous stress and anxiety. Dr. Guttenplan, didn't judge me or rush me. Rather he was so gentle in his words, tone, understanding and guiding me of how to cope with, not only the symptoms of the attack, but of underlying triggers making my recovery harder. He gave me permission to be gentle with myself and much needed validation I'd been through a lot. Even said its his job to be compassionate and it's a privilege to care for me. Deep sigh!!! :-) I wish other Doctors could learn from his excellent example. His knowledge, care and compassion has made me a raving fan for life!!! I just can't truly express how grateful I am to be with such great provider. Thank you!!!!!
