| - A friend of ours was looking online for good "Authentic Jamaican" restaurants in AZ and was referred to The Breadfruit Grill - he took us there for a friend's birthday hoping to try something good and new. I don't know if we were expecting a lot out of it due to good reviews [what do these people eat?!], but it was no where near my good expectations.
First of all, we had a reservation and yet they made us wait for about an hour outside in the AZ summer heat, with no water.
Secondly, it's BYOB so we did just that, but when we got there they refused to keep our beer and white wine cool while we were waiting. It was only when we were finally seated they cooled our wines. Go figure! On top of that, they charged us for cooling and corking them.
We were also told over the phone that we could bring our (ice cream) cake, but since we were waiting for about an hour outside, our ice cream cake had already melted almost all the way - there was no consideration for putting it in a tray of ice when we got there and asked. They finally did when we started eating our entrees. When we ate the cake, they charged us for plates. Does this place not get enough customers that they have to charge us for EVERYTHING?!
The food? Eh - Food was nothing to rave about... We all got the Jerk Chicken, and about half-way eating it we were all dying from it being OVERWHELMINGLY spicy. ***Mind you, 90% of people in our party absolutely LOVE spicy food and have tried "AUTHENTIC" Jamaican food - we even had a few in our party who have even been to Jamaica and have tried the food from all sorts of spots even aside from the resort.*** They weren't even prompt with our drinks to help us to subdue the intense spices of the chicken, so when I said we were dying our tongues were literally dying. I know some of us didn't even want to finish our meal. Not only did it kill our taste buds right off our tongues, it also made us feel like we had dry mouth. The chicken was extremely dry and overcooked; we all agreed we could make better chicken... Why bother going to this place if you can cook better chicken at home, right?!
The ONLY good thing going for this place was the bread stick that came with the meal and maybe the somewhat quaint atmosphere.
You know, you would also think that with such a big party you'd be treated with respect since we brought them a lot of revenue... Sadly, that was not the case. It seems like big parties are such a nuisance to them. Plan on having just a party of 2 people if you plan on dining here with "good" service, but that's even a stretch as I have read on some reviews - Good luck to you!
I really wanted to give this place a chance because I always love to try new places, especially when it is local! BUT--that's an enormous BUT--my first time here was just utterly offensive, obnoxious, disgusting, and disappointing. It's a shame when a big party ALL agrees to never step foot in this place ever again.
Thanks to this place, I have made it a point to look at the low-rating reviews and see if they correlate... I can't trust the "good" reviews on anything anymore; take reviews with a grain of salt. I will let you be the judge of this place, and I hope you don't experience our nightmare with this place, but this is my take on it...
My first experience here is definitely the LAST experience here. FOUR THUMBS DOWN.
