| - I really wanted to give this place an amazing review. I'd wanted to go here for years, and finally last week my husband and I decided to have dinner here to celebrate our pregnancy. It was a mon or tues evening and we made a reservation for 6:30ish. We were seated immediately which was nice.
Okay ambiance, A+. A+++ ambiance. Everything about the ambiance was great, the lighting was soft but bright enough that we can see the menus and each other real easily, unlike some other places. Cute little candle on the table, too.
The bread basket was one of the things I'd been looking forward to the most, we love good bread. Unfortunately I watched tables around us getting their bread baskets, after we had already ordered our drinks and all our food and were waiting for the apps.. so eventually I asked a busser walking by our table if we could please get a bread basket. My husband was like "I can't believe you actually had to ask for it.." so that was pretty meh. The bread was AMAZING so I mean it's just one of those things. Btw we both worked in restaurants for years, he was a cook while I was a server and busser, so we know how restaurants work and I do understand that when it's a busy time or if someone called off that day or something, I understand things aren't always the server's fault.
One thing I never like is when a restaurant refuses to allow any modifications to the menu. I doubt it's the server's fault, clearly the kitchen/managers are the ones who make those rules. We just wanted to switch one of the sides that came with a certain dish for a different side and it wasn't allowed. Whatever not the biggest deal ever but just is not what makes customers happy.
My husband started with the red pepper soup and I had the fall greens salad, and we were gonna share an empanada to start with. He said the soup was fine but he wished there was some type of garnish or mix-in that would give the soup some texture, he said it should be called a puree. This may be personal preference but idk, I don't eat red pepper. The fall greens salad was DELICIOUS. I love this type of salad and they did it well. But they did put beets in it, which is NOT in its description on the menu, so I had to pick them off. The salad was amazing and I ended up wishing I had gotten a second salad as my entree. Now the empanada, oh man. The whole thing was soggy like you had to eat it with fork and knife but the DOUGH ITSELF was soggy like they had poured some kind of juice all over it. Idk, it really didn't seem to match the description on the menu. Sooo disappointing. We literally ate one bite each and left it.
For our entrees, husband got the hanger steak, and I got the spoon burger. I liked that it was grass fed beef. The hanger steak was fine, although they refused to change the side of braised onions to anything else so he just asked for it without any onions. Like great idea, cooked onions as a side dish for a steak *eyeroll*. Oh and they didn't ask what temp he would like his steak cooked to! It came rare, he would have ordered medium-rare but we don't like sending food back so he just ate it. My burger came with fries. The soggiest, bottom of the bucket from the leftovers from lunch that day, soggy ass fries. I don't think they were actually from lunch, they were just some of the most mushy and like neglected fries that I've ever seen. This was REALLY disappointing cause I had been looking forward to them. Thank god we hadn't ordered an extra side of fries as I had originally wanted to. Fix your fries please!! The burger, I had ordered it medium-well and clarified "still juicy like just a little pink but more juicy than well" and it came out VERY VERY VERY well done. I literally only had a few bites cause it was so dry it was hard to eat. I understand I ordered medium-well but there is a difference between medium-well and well done. And yes I know grass fed beef has less fat in it, but if I am able to cook a grass fed burger myself at home and manage to make it juicy at medium-well, a nice restaurant should def be able to do the same.
Andd usually servers ask if we would like a dessert menu or not, we were ready to pay the bill and get out when she just placed dessert menus on the table without saying anything. Not a big deal but again the little things. Anyway we still tipped 25%, total for 2 people was $80 plus tip, not too bad but when 4/5ths of the food sucked that is a lot. I guess I'll give 3 stars instead of 2. Star for ambiance, by appearance you'd expect a 5 star experience. Star for service, it's never perfect anywhere and you can see the servers know the menu, the bussers are helpful and do a great job too, everyone's friendly, seated us right away with our reservation, etc.. and one more star for my salad being great and the fact that they use grass fed beef.
Minus two stars for the rest of the food, all that money wasted, having to ask for the bread basket, etc.. welp wish this had gone better than it did.
