  • When I first got to Canada, back in the summer of 2007, I knew by fall that I'd need a good winter coat and should buy it sooner than later. Friends chuckled at my keenness but I really had no idea on when "coat buying season" began here. Still familiarizing myself with the city and not knowing better, I popped into AAA during one of my many Kensington Market trips. I think my exact request was something like, "I'd like the warmest jacket you can sell me. I'm from Los Angeles and this will be my first real winter." My motivation was to save some money and just get something to get me through until I was working. I ended up with a black field style jacket with a removable liner and a little Canadian flag sewn to a sleeve. I don't think it is authentic gear since it is made in China. (Maybe the Canadian military outsources too these days). The fit is so-so. I think I paid about $200. I had to take it back since the zipper failed. They exchanged it with no problem but the 2nd one had the same issue. I've tried waxing it but it hasn't helped. I just now know not to ever use the zipper (buttons instead) or I might get stuck. And this has been pretty embarrassing at times! While no Canadian Goose, it does keep me fairly warm if I layer. The huge pockets are incredibly useful. You can fit full sized SLRs, books, roast chickens or small mammals in them! Or your gloves and hat and scarf--totally useful when you are going in and out of places in the winter. The sale was a bit pushy. And yeah, that store is totally cramped inside. Also, this is a cash only sort of place. I might go back for something else one day. My sense is that they have stuff that nobody else does and that the surplus stores in this city are vanishing. The store, and experience of buying that coat, is more of a treasured memory surrounding my move to Canada. And I still use the coat. I keep saying, every winter, that I'll finally buy something nicer and more stylish. Maybe next year!
