| - Short and sweet: they told me the car was in great shape, but in 2 months it'll be over $5,000 in repair bills for an $8,000 car. Saw other cars on their lot, none of them were in as good of condition as they made them out to be. None were worth what they were asking either. They didn't communicate at all throughout the purchase. The entire time I felt like they were treating me as if they were doing me a favor, and I should just be happy with the fact that they picked up the phone. Hopefully after you read my experience you'll do better than me and either avoid them or get the car inspected by real mechanics. There's no way they didn't know this car was a POS, my mechanic told me it was... problem was I already owned it. So, so, so stupid of me.
Now, before you go an judge me saying, "Well, it's a used car with 118k miles on it, what'd you expect?", this is my 4th used BMW, all purchased over 110k miles and all sold over 160k miles. I've had this same model previously, so I expected some issues... but this car is in the shape of a car with double the miles. If I paid half of what I did, I still would've been stupid to pay $4k for this car.
My experience with them was bad from the beginning. The car needed front axles and they knew this for weeks while they sat on it. When I decided to buy the car, they then decided to fix them. This was at no cost to me, but why did this sit on it for so long? That was a warning sign for me, but I ignored it (and several more as you'll see). I gave them the money and said I'd pick up the car when the axles were done. A few days go by and I follow up with them, oh, parts aren't in. Over a week later the car is done. No apology. Not even a "sorry it took so long". I left with the impression they were overnighting the parts. Nope, ground shipping from the East Coast. Look at them saving a buck on my time. Eh, I ignored it.
Guess what, car now has a new shake to it. These guys had the audacity to tell me it was probably just an unbalanced wheel. Look, I'm not a mechanic. I can Google and YouTube stuff and do some DIY, but I can't diagnose these things. Well, a few days after buying the car the shaking was getting really bad. I take it to a well known BMW mechanic... bad drive shafts. $2100 in repairs. Rear axles and wheel bearings probably also shot.
The A/C also wasn't working. They said, "eh, it's just low. A can at Walmart will top it off and it'll be fine". In 115 degree heat I found out it was a bad air compressor. Not exactly a $10 can of refrigerant!
This was fun... found out the hazards button doesn't work, as my car was breaking down on the freeway in rush hour on the FIRST DRIVE HOME! There was a ripped intake boot, and I knew this was an issue from my previous car. They replaced it free of charge, thanks for that $20 part... but it wasn't the issue. Turns out the fuel gauge doesn't work. I was at 1/4 tank and still had over 80 miles according to the computer. Nope, 1/4 tank is empty. They did fill it up with gas after diagnosing that. Thanks for the $20 in gas?
My second tow... yes, my second, was when the ignition switch went out. BTW, I have 2 sets of keys. One to open the door, one to start the car. Key fobs don't work, they're aftermarket and junk. Have to manually unlock everything.
When I was looking at the car the guy was trying to tell me it was a "California car". What? Are you serious? You gave me the Carfax that said it was a Northeastern car almost it's entire life! It was just the previous owner that was in CA. Oh... now he remembers. Not a lot of rust though, they had it on the lift, no big deal. Yeah, that's NOT what my mechanic said...
Should I go on? I'll stop here and just tell you there's even more wrong with this car. I'm not doing these repairs. I'm trading this car in to a dealership and letting them deal with this problem. I knew the car had issues, but there's no freaking way they didn't know all of this stuff. So yes, I am to blame for buying this car and yes I know it's used. But, this is excessive. This car should be parted out, and I've considered doing it.
If these guys told me I was buying a POS, I would be posting a different story, but that's not what they sold me on. My mechanic was basically shocked I bought this car. I'm now paying a couple grand to get rid of this headache. It's an $8,000 car... I'm not made of money. As far as it being a BMW and not a Toyota... this is my 4th Bimmer and none of them were this bad, and I've had Toyotas that blew up engines with less miles on them. I knew it would cost more to maintain, but I didn't know I was buying a lemon. OK, I'm done ranting...avoid or get the car inspected. Don't be like that dumb guy on Yelp who wrote that novel..
