| - Yes, I have a big sentimental tie to Thrifty's ice cream as it evokes strong, happy childhood memories. I was born and raised in Central California, and for those not familiar with the store, I would say it would be the equivalent to a CVS or Walgreens today. I also remember when the ice cream was as cheap as .05 cents for a single scoop, .10 cents for a double and .15 cents for a triple. That same double scoop, in a cup, now is about $4.00.
To me growing up, Thrifty's Ice Cream was the poor man's Baskin Robbins. It was just good, honest, simple ice cream that was inexpensive. Nothing fancy. That's why I believe there is almost a cult-ish following of this ice cream. However, there are two flavors, to me, that stand out and cannot be duplicated nor surpassed. They are Chocolate Malted Crunch and Mint Chip (actual chocolate shavings, not chips). Others swear by Pistachio Nut, Black Cherry, Rainbow Sherbet, and Birthday Cake. But those two flavors are my absolute favorite in Thrifty's line. The set up is similar like that from way back in the day, large cylinder containers with ice cream and their infamous cylinder scoop. I've been to other places serving Thrifty's ice cream but this location has that original Thrifty's ice cream scoop!
As for the store itself, it is pretty basic with minimal decor. Okay, there's hardly *any* decor and lacks that warmth like a couple others had mentioned. Even some background music of some sort would be a plus. But it's clean. It has never been busy the times I have gone in and service has been good.
Yeah, there may be better ice creams out there nowadays such as Coldstone's or even local ice cream shops which can be a little more exotic with their flavor pallette. Then there's your Haagendaas and Ben & Jerry's in the grocery stores. But there is that strong nostalgic tie many of us have with Thrifty's Ice Cream that we cannot overlook and I am glad there are places like Scoops that still serve it.
