| - The light and sound show of the canopy covering Fremont Street is interesting initially, but it gets old really fast. It's the same old show repeated over and over again every night. The show does change once in a while, but not enough for my liking. Technologically, it is getting dated now, too. I was staring at it the other night, and the visuals look like they was made up of very large pixels. With today's hi-def screen technology, it could be updated so it doesn't look so 1995, the year of its opening. The sound isn't that great either and could use upgrading. However, half of the people under the canopy are probably first-time tourists and seemed to be wowed. Admittedly, the canopy is huge and unlike anything else in the world, so it is striking in this regard. For me, though, it really needs to be refreshed. 3 stars for the sound and light show.
The casinos on Fremont St. are pretty good, though. Not as big also as the ones on the Strip, so you won't get lost. Decent restaurants in the casinos for the price, too. I particularly like the fried Twinkies and Oreos in Mermaid's casino. 4 stars for the casinos.
I also give 4 stars for the stores: There are numerous souvenir stores such as ABC Stores, where you can buy t-shirts, keychains, etc. for cheap. Walgreens is great for water, soft drinks, snacks, prescription and non-prescription medications.
Give Fremont Street a visit to supplement your visit to Vegas, as the city is not just the Strip.
