  • My first time to Donovan's in many years and now I realize why it will be my last EVER! My lady friend and I are there two minutes before 5pm for our 5pm reservation on a Saturday night and yet they tell us they can't seat us and recommend that we have a seat in their lounge. Really, it's middle June on a Saturday and I have to wait an extra 15 minutes for a restaurant that just opened for the evening. When we were seated their were several others already seated and the place wasn't even a quarter full at this time. Makes me wonder if their staffing was just not prepared for the evening. We were seated nicely and offered fresh cold water upon arrival. Bread which I would say at the best was no better then a small loaf from Fry's was served right away with two small dabs of cold butter! I will say the bacon mac & cheese was excellent as was the wedge salad and they were very accommodating to supply me with extra blue cheese crumbles and dressing and the salad as fresh and cold served on a nice ice cold plate. What you old expect for a wedge salad. Now on to the fun part, I say this tongue & cheek as this part was not so much fun. I ordered the most expensive ala carte meat choice on the menu, the Porterhouse. Upon presentation not bad, vegetables looked nice and fresh and the steak looked cooked well. But from the moment I tried to cut into the non filet side I was disappointed. I struggled to cut the meat with the knife at first thinking it must be the blade was not sharp enough but hey I'm a big tough guy I can cut through this right! Then came the part to chew. My first piece I chewed and chewed and chewed never once being able to break don this piece of meat, so I spit it out as I couldn't swallow this fatty, grizzly piece of meat. I tried again, same result. So after waiting what seemed like 15 min for someone to finally come over and asked what I thought of my meal I explained this wasn't going to cut it, pardon the pun. The waiter seemed put off that I would Question the integrity and quality of their steak, I felt put off that I would be challenged & questioned at such a high end establishment. Finally he realized I was serious and he offered to bring out another porterhouse. Within 5 min or so what appeared to be a manager named Jeffery came out to offer his sincere apologizes as it appears they researched this cut of meat and found to be in agreement that it was not to be up to anyone's standards for a $70 cut of meat. He not only offered to replace it for free but threw in to free deserts to my date and I. It was a nice overture and the right thing to do. But I will agree with others, the steaks here are overly seasoned and take away from the flavor of a good cut of meat. So was not impressed by the steaks, but the Mac and cheese appetizer, that was a Homerun! All and all not a bad dining experience, but far from the best ive ever received.
