| - I recently spent a couple of days in Charlotte for work, and once again was able to visit Cast Iron Waffles for some decadent Belgian Liege Waffles. These are not your Eggos or quick and dirty offerings from Waffle House and the like. Nope. These are high pearl sugar content, caramelized pastries made on a very special constant temperature griddle. They are then topped with various toppings like Nutella, fresh fruit, whipped cream, and so on ... the one topping missing? Syrup. But you neither want it, or need it.
So having already developed a jones for these waffles ... I was pleasantly surprised that Cast Iron Waffles now had more than one location! Yippee! And one of them was only three miles from my hotel, rather than having to schlep halfway across the city to the wonderful (but remote, for me) original location.
When I visited, the café was spotlessly clean, the staff were pleasant and quick to serve, and not only did I stuff myself there ... I took home a package of 12 frozen waffles for the family! They love them, too. Funny stickers on the bag of frozen waffles tell you how to gently heat them for best effect, warn against the crime of using a microwave, and even suggest that it is illegal to use a microwave on these waffles in Belgium. Funny, but we duly followed the instructions at home, and had a product exactly the same in terms of crispiness ... as we would have received in the store. I guess these folks really know what they are doing!
Five thumbs up!
