| - La Santisima is a great option for legit Mexican in Phoenix. The food itself is 5 stars; the only thing preventing a perfect 5/5 was the service. The waitresses were very friendly and by no means provided poor service, but definitely left some to be desired with only a 2-3 total pit stops to the table. In all fairness, it's a bit "divey," so it's part of the experience.
This originally caught our eye as it was featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, as well as great reviews. The selling point and highlight of our visit was the salsa bar. I consider myself a salsa pro (I refuse to buy jarred salsa, I'll only make my own), so it was fun to sample 15+ varieties. Pro tip: only the first basket of chips is free. Additional baskets are $2.40/each.
Our tacos and burro were great themselves, but did need some pizazz from the salsa bar, perhaps by design? After we doctored them up a bit, we wiped our plates clean. The tortillas were especially delicious. Value was also great. With water to drink, our total after tax was less than $20. Overall, I would recommend La Santisima!
