I usually fly Southwest, but work commitments meant I flew US Airways this time. I was unimpressed with the lack of in-flight entertainment (on an over five-hour flight all the way to the West Coast), but the sour taste started way before that.
When I went to check-in online, I noticed that they had four first-class seats still available and they were selling the upgrade for $245. Later, when I got to the gate, I heard the gate agent announce that they still had upgrades available for $245. Later, as I was boarding, I asked if they still had first-class available and the agent said yes. Really, you aren't going to give out free upgrades at this point?! As I entered the plane and passed the first flight attendant, I playfully mentioned to him that he could come grab me in coach rather than leave any first-class seats open. He stated in earnest that "Oh no, I don't do that."
What kind of business is being run here? Throw a few passengers a bone and bump them up to first. Maybe you'll get what's called "repeat business"! Or at least a good Yelp review.
