| - The Cork Factory has a lot of pluses, that's for sure. The apartment layouts and exposed brick are stunning, the tenants are mostly very friendly, and the outdoor space is great when the sun is shining. But don't be fooled by all of this. If you're looking for a quiet and comfortable home, pass on the glitz of the Cork Factory.
When I moved to Pittsburgh (from NYC...no stranger to noise) I feel in love with this place on sight and signed the lease. Boy was I in for a headache. First, the heating system made this ungodly rattling noise (which, to be fair, the management fixed...after a number of complaints). Then came the train. Good god is it loud. There is an active train track not 20 feet from the building and because the roads don't have those barricades that lower to prevent cars from coming on the tracks, the train has to blow its amazing loud horn every few feet (think the train scene from My Cousin Vinney...but way worse). My apartment (1207) happened to be on the side that the train goes by making it particularly unpleasant (several times a week at all hours of the night). My apartment also had the nice feature of no sound insulation between a wall in my bedroom and a staircase which was quite frequently used. That meant that whenever any went down them in the morning (think 6-7am) I could hear every single step as if it were landing on my head. Next, despite what they tell you (and I fought for a while with the building manager on this one), the windows suck for stopping noise. Loud, drunk tenants come home at all hours and that's fine and all if I can't hear them, but b/c of the terrible sound insulation, I could hear every loud, drunken, word. Finally, everyone has a dog. That's fine. I love dogs. But not when they bark...constantly. On my floor some terrible yappy dog (you know the king) would go off at everything. Thankfully, that apartment was enough down the hall that I couldn't hear it from my place, but I can only imagine what it was like for the neighbors. And the dogs like to (obviously) bark outside too...all the damn time. Pair that with the "wonderful" windows and you can imagine the hell.
So yes, lots of pluses for this place, but the negatives, as you can see, at least for me, massively outweighed them. I wound up breaking my lease (and paying a pretty penny to do so) and moving to a private house in Shadyside. Couldn't be happier now.
