| - I have to preface this review by admitting that I am a member. And I have been for 2.5 years.
That said, I finagled a cheap rate way back when and have access to the other (and better) locations, but this one is closest to my house so I end up here 9 times out of 10.
The gym itself is quite beautiful, housed in a former movie theatre. There's a lot of cardio equipment, but beware the broken machines which say "Will be serviced shortly, thanks, the management, happy face" for months on end. It's become a graveyard for unserviced machinery.
The classes are o.k. I'm a fitness instructor personally, so I'm a bit biased with respect to evaluating classes. I find that the schedule is dense with options, but not consistent with offering one type of class more than once or twice per week. People need that, it's how they develop skill. There are obviously some star class instructors, like the guy who teaches spinning a few times per week and always has a packed class, but otherwise, the classes seem underwhelming.
This location offers daycare, is on the subway line and has immense turnaround in terms of counter staff. I rarely see the same person on the weekends.
And speaking of broken equipment, try not to be swayed by the incredible "amenities" when deciding whether or not to join.
The water is often cold in the showers (the WORST in the winter, or post-sweaty, sweaty workout) and I once had my hair catch fire using one the "amenity" hairdryers. Amazing. Then there are the typical dirty washrooms and although towels are free for patron usage, they're really small (like tea towel sized), thin (like they don't absorb water) and they often look and/or smell diseased. I still use them though, because I am apparently disgusting. Or lazy. Take your pick.
My biggest gripe with this place is actually the management. I attended the gym for months once I joined without every having paid a monthly due. This didn't come to my attention, however, until about six months into my membership there when my card began getting flagged upon entry and then I was subsequently treated as some deadbeat who doesn't pay their club dues. The manager came to talk to me (after making me wait 15 minutes) to tell me I hadn't been paying. "Didn't you notice?" he said. And I was like "No, I get and pay my credit card bill each month. I don't look at the individual purchases because it's depressing".
So then they demanded six months dues up front before I was allowed entry again. This, their mistake, was now my problem. The worst part was that they basically refused to claim their mistake and suggested that there was some glitch somewhere. As though I'm the first person to have this happen to them.
Anyway like I said, I go because it's close, but if there was a better option (I WISH Riverdale Fitness was a better place) I would go there.
