When I heard about this place, I wasn't sure what to expect. I thought this would be something with modern instruments played by (insert artist here) so I wasn't that interested. The name of the place certainly doesn't tell you how awesome it is or what the museum is about.
I've been to dozens of museums... art, history, monuments and a few of the Smithsonian museums. Once you've visited so many, I think you start to build up an expectation and a general sense of knowing what makes a world-class museum.
I don't say this lightly. The Musical Instrument Museum is a WORLD-CLASS MUSEUM! If you live in Phoenix and haven't been here... what is wrong with you? This is easily on top of the list of best museums that I've ever been to.
On to what this museum is. This museum is divided into sections. There are huge rooms that are continents. Each one of those continent sections is then divided into individual countries. You can literally travel all over the world in this one museum.
It should be noted that you receive a headset that connects wirelessly to whichever display you're in front of. Each country has instruments that originated there along with short videos that have people playing and/or talking about those instruments. Most of those videos also include snippets of history. You might be thinking to yourself... how is this place so great? This place isn't just about guitars, drums, and your basic everyday instruments that American bands play.
Different countries use different instruments and I guess I didn't realize how vast that collection could be. Along with the videos in each section, there are also text displays with history. This isn't a place you want to show up two hours before they close. I was in complete awe by the amount of information within these walls. I'm sure there's a statistic somewhere but you could probably spend a day or two here and still not have everything covered if you take advantage of the videos, texts, and everything else this place has to offer.
I think this place shines with the history of the world musical instruments sections. There are other sections to be explored. Sections where you can play instruments yourself. And of course... they also have a section with instruments and clothing that were used by modern-day musicians.
While there were plenty of people walking around, there never was a spot where it was packed. That's disappointing. I'm sure people go here all the time but they're overwhelmed by all the information and don't enjoy it as much as they should.
Enjoy this place. Utilize this place. It's worth your time a million times over.
