| - Steinberg Diagnostic is the only company, I have ever dealt with, who I have had two major billing issues with. In less than two years they have now twice misquoted me copays and then billed me later for charges I wasn't expecting. If you want to go here, don't be surprised if this shady medical practitioner tells you one price, and after you pay it, they tell you you need to pay even more. They don't even know how much their own services cost, and I feel like they purposely are miss-charging people.
The first incident: My wife had an MRI, they told us the Copay was $40. A month or two later we got a bill for an additional $75. We called and were told it would be looked into. A few months later, without receiving any more bills or any phone calls, I was contacted by collections for the $75. Steinberg never even tried to contact me a second time (though they claimed they had sent bills, though no calls). After it went to collections, I contacted Steinberg and they told me our copay was actually 10% of the MRI cost, which should have been $115, not $40.
Now as far as I'm concerned, if you tell someone a charge should be $40, and they paid $40, you should just suck up the fact you made a mistake and eat the difference. Imagine you ate at a restaurant and they told you the steak dinner was $40. You eat your dinner and pay the $40, and on the way out they tell you they made a mistake, the steak was $115 and you still owe them $75. What would you do?
Anyway, one of their employees Stacy (who was nice) helped me settle the issue, even though I did end up paying the collection agency like an idiot. If you want the whole story read my first review.
The second incident: My wife has an MRI in January. Knowing the issues from the first time we made sure we had an accurate copay. It was pretty heavy, a little over $140, but at least we knew it was accurate (or so we thought). My wife even told the receptionist about our problem the year before and she said we shouldn't be getting any extra bill this time, as we had paid our 10%.
Now in February we get a bill for $37 dollars. I call and speak to Marie, who says she doesn't know why I was charged and it will be looked into. Now in April I get a bill from "Stonehill Billing Recovery Services" for the $37. I call and speak to a Julia in Billing.
Julia tells me that they after the insurance processed the claim, I still owed $37, their estimate must have been off. I wont lie, I got upset, this was the second time they had miss-charged me, and they had sent it to collections even after I called in February. She tells me not to worry about collections, as Stonehill isn't collections, its just another name they bill under.
I speak to her Supervisor Ana, who tells me they can't provide accurate copays because the insurance has to process first. I told her that their company is unethical and I won't be paying it. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
Is Steinberg so incompetent that they don't even know how much they charge for an MRI? If an MRI is $1200, then the copay at 10% is $120. How does the cost of your own procedure go up after you charge them? It just doesn't make sense.
And what's with the Stonehill letter? Did my first bill even really go to collections? Did they con me with threatened interest fees (which I paid, but was compensated for). I feel like the victim of a con man, and in a way, I guess I am.
What they are doing is probably technically legal, but unethical and immoral and akin to theft. They are con artist and I strongly urge you to take your business elsewhere. They are the equivalent of the shady mechanic that looks OK on the surface, but rips off their customers every chance they get.
