We discovered this place last night from the door man at The Nash downtown. We were deeply disappointed to find out that the show we wanted to see was sold out. So I was in a grouchy mood when we got to Ziggy's. There were no tables available, they were all reserved...but the server kept an eye out for us and made sure we got a seat. I REALLY appreciated that! (She had no idea I was down in the dumps.)
Tony Vacca was playing sax and Delphine Cortez was singing jazz. Even though I know nothing about music, I could tell she is incredibly accomplished and has a very pure sounding voice. After some classic jazz songs like Girl from Ipanema (in which she lighheartedly rearranged words) she sang Ode to Billie Joe as a request for someone that was having a birthday. Wow! Amazing range to go from an ehterial jazz sound to a kind of earthy, deep bluesy, slightly twangy tone. There was a high school age boy (Tony's son?) playing trumpet who was really great. Delphine was challenging him to a duel with notes and he was able to emulate her high pitched challenge on the trumpet...which was really cute.
The prices were very good and the food quality was excellent. The Wine Lover's Board was beautifully presented. They rolled the prosciutto up into a little rose which was very charming. Then, they artfully drizzled a balsamic reduction over it. I get these types of boards all over the Valley and this one really stood out. (Some of the chef boards are pricey and lame...where it's more about charging a lot for a small amount of food atfully displayed.) My glass of wine was a very generous serving and was $11.00 dollars but it was one of the most expensive on the list. It was really nice to see wine by the glass that started around $7.00. Everyhting doesn't have to cost a fortune!
Considering there was live music and great food...I'd highly recommend this place. It has a really nice, friendly, kind of neighborhood vibe. Good cocktails too at reasonable prices.
