| - Went into my local CarMax on Warm Springs Road in Henderson looking to get an appraisal on my 2012 Audi A-6 with 55,000 miles. According to various web sites like Edmunds, Kelly, and CarGurus it is worth around $19,500 as a trade-in, around $22,500 for a private sale, and around $24,500 for a dealer sale.
Spoke to a nice young man names Ash and he told me it would take around 30 minutes and that if I liked the appraisal I could get a check right away. The process took closer to 45 minutes and I had a nice chat with Ash in the meantime.
Finally they came back with the "appraisal" and offer. I literally thought that they left off a digit. It was $9,000. As I said, the trade-in value is about $19,500 according to the various internet sites. The car was just detailed and is in excellent condition.
The "appraiser" wanted to explain to me why the appraisal was $9,000 (nothing was mechanically wrong with the car), but after wasting 45 minutes of my life I was not about to waste 10 minutes more. I walked out and told them I would never, ever set foot back in that place again, never do business with CarMax, and never recommend it to anyone.
I told the sales person, Ash, who was a student in college, that his company was not honest and that he might seriously consider whether he wanted to continue to work for them. I didn't blame him for the attempted thievery.
Needless to say, I do not recommend wasting your time going to CarMax for an appraisal on your car. Based on my experience, I have to assume that everything that they do is dishonest, so I would highly recommend that you not do any business with this company.
