| - A family member was treated by Dr. Deroock of Ironwood Cancer Research. The group has multiple facilities and the family member (patient) was seen in at least two of their locations so this review is of the group in general, not necessarily this specific location.
The facility itself is clean and modern. Wait times were reasonable and the reception staff was helpful and courteous. Dr. Deroock seemed knowledgeable and in most of our interactions was helpful.
However, there were two negative incidents with the facility that prompted me to write this review. The first was related to insurance and so reflects on the facility and Dr. Deroock. The second was related to Dr. Deroock only.
The first incident was related to an imminent change of insurance. We notified ICR that insurance would change shortly, as it seemed the right thing to do. They immediately diverted us to their finance department, which promptly cancelled the appointment and said we need to "figure out" the insurance situation before we could continue w/treatment. The patient was still covered that day by the insurance that had been used up to that point. The new insurance would cover the treatment and, if there were any other issues, I would have paid out of pocket and been reimbursed. This tells me that ICR puts money over care absolutely. I say this also reflects negatively on Dr. Deroock b/c I believe as a physician he is responsible for the conduct and ethics of the practice in which he works.
The second incident was related to a need to admit the patient to a hospital for immediate treatment. The details are too personal so I'll include only the gist. The patient saw their primary care physician for an urgent need. The PCP stated the patient need attention from the ER right away. The PCP didn't have admitting privileges and called Dr. Droock to see if he did. Deroock did and refused to admit the patient w/o seeing the patient - which could not have happened that day. Since there was another physician making the admission recommendation it seems reasonable to have helped in this situation. Of course, I'm not a doctor or medical professional so perhaps this is normal, however, for me, it seemed Dr. Deroock simply wanted to avoid the situation.
The rating reflects the fact that I believe Dr. Deroock is competent and ICR seems like a good facility, for the services they offer, but, if you're looking for a practice and physician that put patient care first, I don't think this is the place for you.
P.S. ICR didn't have comprehensive cancer care w/in a single location during the time of my experiences with them - which is incredibly inconvenient and hard on the patient.
