| - We bought something in store from the floor, and everything went smoothly, except for the extra $80 they charge for stain protection.
My wife and I needed a recliner. First we looked around for something used (classifieds, thrift stores), and finally came to the conclusion we needed something new, and since we had wasted a lot of time looking for something used, we needed something fairly fast.
La-Z-Boy makes great furnitures, and their recliners are extremely comfy and well built, so this is the obvious choice. We knew we would have to deal with salesmen, but we didn't see any way around that.
So, we came in the store, and were picked up as potential customers by a salesman in about 30 seconds. We realized that talking in private without a saleseman around just wasn't going to happen.
Nearly everything in the store was "on sale", but very few items actually listed the MSRP. The only ones that did were things marked as 30%, 40%, or 50% off. There were quite a few that were 50% off. Looking at the discounted prices, these didn't seem to be any better deals than the other stuff in the showroom.
The model we liked the most was "on sale" for $499, with no MSRP listed. We said we would think about it and possibly come back another day. The salesman said that "the sales change every week, so the price tomorrow could be different, because that is a new week". We said we didn't care.
As we left, a store manager (who had been watching the whole time) interrupted, and said "Make sure you ask for ----- (the person we had been talking to) when you come back, because she should get the commission for your sale."
As soon as we got in the parking lot, we could finally talk truthfully with each other, and we discovered that we were in agreement that this recliner was what we wanted. So we went out for lunch, and came back.
It turns out that the price we were told ($499) didn't include the $80 for the stain resistant application, which was already on all the floor models. Our choices were to pick a color that was available in the warehouse, and wait 2-3 weeks for it to be delivered, or pick a color that was not in the warehouse, and have it custom made. We really wanted the floor model (it was a good color), and so the floor manager had to be consulted again. The floor manager said it was ok, so we paid our $579+tax, put the recliner in our SUV, and drove home. It's been great since then!
I see from other reviews that when you are told you may need to wait, it can often be much longer than their estimate. Knowing that, I'm definitely glad that we chose a floor model that they didn't need to keep.
I completely forgot to ask if they had price guarantees. I really wish a service like camelcamelcamel existed for stuff like this, so you can see how much the price varies from week to week. It looks like the day-to-day prices for all the recliners are on the main website, so I'm planning to track the price for the one I got over a few weeks. If it goes lower than what I paid, I'll go back in and try to get a price adjustment.
