  • I was referred to Sylvia by the shop where I bought my wedding dress. The reasons I was convinced to use Sylvia was because the shop-owner of the bridal shop has a good history with one of my friends, the shop has been using Sylvia for 5 years, and Sylvia would do all my fittings in the bridal shop which was convenient considering I live very close to the bridal shop. My frustrations began when I was not informed of what forms of payment were accepted. I used a credit card in the bridal shop to purchase my dress, and was unaware that I could not use a card to pay Sylvia until the end of my first fitting appointment when I was expected to pay half of the alterations payment with cash or check only. I had neither cash nor my checkbook as I assumed I could use my card since that was how I paid for my dress in the shop. It needed to be made very clear by both Sylvia and the bridal shop (as the bridal shop books her appointments for her) that the only acceptable methods of payment were cash or check and I would have had that with me the day of the first fitting. I also think if it is check or cash only payments, then an initial fitting to get the cost amount should be included prior to the first fitting so I would know the exact amount needed for that half payment at the first fitting. Most alterations places do this-an initial fitting to give the cost amount and then schedule a first fitting. As a result of this issue, I was told by Sylvia I could mail my payment to her at the address on the receipt-which is the address for AAA Custom Tailoring & Formal Wear in Scottsdale. I am always leery about sending checks in the mail, but the check we mailed our DJ made it to him without a problem, so I mailed the check. After not having the check cashed 2 weeks later, I began attempting to call Sylvia because I was worried about why the check had not been cashed. It was near impossible to reach Sylvia. Her shop phone is either connected to a fax machine or the other person in the shop cannot answer any questions, so I was referred to call Sylvia's cell phone number. This also resulted in me leaving messages more than once as she does not answer her cell phone. After leaving more than one message about my missing check and the status of my wedding dress-which she had-I called the bridal shop. Of course, since Sylvia is 3rd party, they didn't want to help me much, but they finally submitted to calling Sylvia on my behalf to help me get a hold of her. Eventually, Sylvia called me back at an inappropriate hour-about 8:30pm on a Friday evening, which is completely outside of work hours. This whole process to reach her took about a week's time, which is unrealistic especially for someone altering an expensive and important dress. Once I reached her, she claimed she never received my check. I still find that difficult to believe as the envelope was never returned to me and I still don't know where it is to this day. I honestly believe it arrived to her shop and got misplaced in her shop, but there is no way to prove that. I was forced then to pay $25 to cancel the check for fear of someone forging it and cashing it or even Sylvia forgetting that I paid her a second time and her cashing it and me being overdrawn on my bank account. It was far safer to cancel that check. Since I was the one put out by all of this, I asked Sylvia to discount my alterations by $25 and she flat out refused stating it wasn't her fault that the check went MIA and I should not have paid to cancel it because no one else but her can cash it. Has she not heard of identity theft? Check fraud? Check forgery? It was a risk I was not willing to take, but I also would never had to have mailed it if I was properly informed of the accepted methods of payment at my bridal shop or at an initial fitting. Fortunately, the bridal shop owner gave me the $25 as she had thought Sylvia would discount my services and understand the frustration I was dealing with. Sylvia eventually discounted my services at the final fitting, but I reminded her that the bridal shop owner already took onus and gave me the $25 so I didn't take her additional $25 off because that would have been dishonest. I would not recommend Sylvia for wedding dress alterations because she is impossible to get a hold of, only accepts cash or check payment (which is hard for some with wedding costs so high), and because she only did an okay job. There were wrinkles in the fabric where she didn't sew it right on the bodice and they are so visible in my photos that it makes me really upset that it looks like that-she didn't alter it well enough to fit normally (and I have worn dresses of that shape before without that bunching on the waist. I have also seen wedding dresses on many people of different sizes and the bunched up fabric is not there) and she also did not follow through with things I asked her to do. I just feel it is important that it should be easy to communicate with your alterations place.
