  • A decent convention centre, but its age is definitely showing. You'd think I'd have a glowing review for this place, considering that I went to a luncheon event where the Prime Minister of Canada's wife spoke, but somehow this hotel found a way to surprise me. I wasn't even expecting to come here, but decided at the last minute (media coverage and a free lunch - first world problems) to make the trek with my co-worker into the city, just past Yonge/Dundas Square, to this hotel. The first thing I noticed upon entering the hotel was that it was extremely busy. Maybe it's always like that at 10 a.m. on Thursdays, but I saw an extremely-disorganized line with people grumbling as they waited. Noticing that the nearby restaurant, T Bar, was also closed, I chalked it up to "one of those days" and went upstairs. After dealing with an offsite event organizer who mixed up our tickets, we finally got inside and had access to a media table in the room. I noted that this was a decent, if fairly unappealing space (the Roosevelt Ballroom) that looked like it was in need of sprucing up. The event itself, helmed by the Economic Club of Canada, went fine, but I constantly found myself thinking that I was sitting in a ballroom from the 70s. The fact that the coffee and tea station outside seemingly ran dry and was taken out, not to be replaced for the rest of the day, also seemed kind of stingy to me. My co-worker and I ended up staying for lunch afterwards and had what appeared to be some kind of herb-crusted chicken on-top of a bed of rice. I give the staff props for being extremely organized and diligent - they had platters of dishes coming out of their nearby kitchen like an assembly line - but the food itself was just ho-hum. I feel like they could have done more with it (maybe season it?), and compared to the dish I had at a similar Economic Club function held at the Hilton Toronto last month (grilled salmon over a bed of couscous), this was sorely lacking. I'd probably go back to the Chelsea again for another event, but I'd advise anyone attending conferences here to keep your expectations in check. Service variations and a blah lunch pared down what was otherwise a solid 4-star venue.
