| - First time in was just for vegetables and some meat; noticed immediately place is super clean. Great Asian vegetable selection - bought 2 kinds of bok choy; carrots at .59 cents per bag; and ground beef for $2.19 lb. on sale (good quality too - I cooked it and only ended up with about 2-3 tablespoons of grease. Glad I bought 2 pounds! I was paying $3.99 lb. everywhere else.). Got a 1.5 pound pork shoulder roast for $3.50 - did that in the slow cooker; again, very little fat and it was a very nice cut. I was most impressed. Like the 99 Ranch in Chinatown that I was a regular at, they have things like fresh ground chicken, which is a great substitute in recipes. Being able to get pork belly is also a huge plus!
Would have like to explore the fish market as well, but boy, was it crowded! About 20-25 people in line. Fish looked great though. My whole bill from the first trip ended up as a whopping $15 and change. I'm doing all my meat shopping here, thank you very much. The cashier was also very pleasant.
Last night (1/5/16) was my second visit; was raining and I was very impressed that they had a staff member right at the entrance with a mop cleaning up in case people didn't wipe their feet properly on the mats. I'm a paralegal - I like when stores proactively prevent hazards!! Needless to say, I wiped my feet carefully - the staff member gave me a big smile and thanked me.
Headed straight to hot food counter to grab half a roast duck (its equivalent to Sam Woo BBQ in Chinatown, except I got a bit more than I would at Sam Woo). Checked out the dim sum and got 3 kinds - deep fried shrimp balls (covered in won ton strips), shrimp balls rolled in sticky rice and a pork/fish cake shumai. All were delicious; the deep fried shrimp balls were large and just like what I would get at Chang's at dim sum. The shrimp balls in sticky rice were huge, filling and 2 would make a good meal. The pork/fish cake shumai was yummy too and I recognized the flavor immediately as something we would get at Chang's but I never knew what it was (I usually go with my Asian friend who knows what everything is and she's great about picking). Everything was in the traditional steam tins, which were transferred to take out boxes - was still hot when I got home too! Each item contained 3 pieces - so 9 pieces of dim sum; cost was around $8 and well worth it. My roommate and I had dim sum for dinner and saved the duck for today.
The best thing about the experience at the hot food counter was the service - the lady behind the counter was SUPER friendly and happy to explain what everything was. She was so sweet and patient with questions and recommended some of her favorite dishes. Looks like they've been watching their reviews; the ordering was very well organized. I will definitely be a regular - no longer will I have to drive across the city for dim sum; I can just pick it up there and take it home. Also looking forward to trying some of the hot bar items and the pho bar!
