| - I've been to Hot Rod in Oakland twice.
The first time, I went for a horizontal eyebrow (surface) piercing. The piercer was very friendly. My only two issues with him were 1.) he pierced before I exhaled (minor, but) and 2.) He used a curved barbell instead of a surface barbell, which is generally what are to be used for such piercings.
The second time was not such a good experience. I went for a septum piercing about two months after my eyebrow. The piercer (not the same as my first time) wasn't friendly, acted almost like I was wasting his time. He did not explain the procedure or my jewelry options at all - basically did the piercing, and that was it. I researched these piercings beforehand and knew they were to go through the sweet spot and pinch, but that sucker hurt. Wasn't just a little pinch by any means.
Now, my eyebrow has been red for quite some time, but I had another piercer tell me it is simply irritated. My septum is fine, too - I get the pinchy crusties, but the pain does not even begin to compare to the original piercing. Could the issues of a surface bar and the painful septum piercing been solved with more experienced piercers? It could have just been the piercers I had. Regardless, I don't think I'll be going back to Hot Rod.
