  • Cedar Lee drew me in most recently for one of their monthly Cult Film Series showings. The title: 2001: A Space Odyssey. Being an independent theater, Cedar Lee shows predominantly harder to come by, low-budget, indie, documentaries and foreign films. This theater is also famous for their Cult Film Series. On the first Saturday of each month, a different "cult film" is featured. Also on the first Saturday of each month, it's tradition they show Rocky Horror Picture Show at midnight. Dressing in drag is encouraged. A few advantageous specials to note: Admission is $5 on Monday's. Free 32oz popcorn on Tuesdays. Half priced beer & wine on Wednesdays. On Thursdays, a student ID will get you an admission for $6. Cedar Lee is a little rough around the edges, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Above the entrance is a classic marquee. Inside, the decor is vintage art-deco. The concession stand offers a variety of craft brews as well as wine. They also have local coffee & espresso's from Phoenix Coffee. If you're into food, the theater sells an assortment of cakes, cookies, tea biscuits and even wraps from Tommy's on Coventry. This of course in addition to typical movie snacks such as ju ju bees and fresh-popped popcorn. The seating isn't as comfy or as roomy as in some of the new mega-theaters. The sound isn't as boisterous either, but what it lacks in technology, it makes up in character. And character goes a long way with me. One of the things I appreciate most about Cedar Lee is the general audience compared to that of the mega-theaters. You typically won't find this place as a hangout for droves of teens spoiling a film by chatting it up through an entire feature. Instead, Cedar Lee Theater goers seem more refined and appear to have an overall better appreciation towards the arts. Do you read me, HAL?
