  • My children and I had to purchase a small heater and heated blankets... and camp in one of the bedrooms... because you don't know your homes! Moved in late on a Thursday afternoon, around 3pm. There was already water and electricity to the townhome we leased, so before we left to retrieve items from storage, I set both heaters to 72 degrees because it was 64 degrees inside the townhome. While we were at my storage unit sorting through items we would need until we could get a UHaul to move our household items, I contacted Duke Energy and the local water company to schedule to have accounts transferred to my name; I had to look this information up online as it was not provided to me. I was told by a co-worker that most homes in my area are heated with natural gas, so I called Piedmont Natural Gas (another story of its own) and other natural gas companies - they don't service my address (so I'm told). I called ARP and was told that Duke Energy was who I needed to call for heat. So I called Duke Energy again...I was told they don't provide natural gas. So, naturally, I assumed that my townhome is heated through electricity. I have never lived in a home that uses natural gas, so I didn't know what to look for or how to tell. Upon our return home at around 730-800pm, the house was at 63 degrees - I called my agent (who lives in MI) and she tried to help me out, she didn't know either. Then I called my co-worker and he asked me to look at a few things and we figured out that heat to my townhome was supposed to be via natural gas. Too late to do anything about it, gas company was closed! So we had added and unnecessary expenses to be made - we had to purchase a small room heater and a couple of heating blankets, then camped out in one of the smaller rooms to stay warm. The next day (Friday), my agent called ARP and she was also told that Duke Energy is who we needed to call for heat. Needless to say, I was getting rather annoyed. I called Piedmont Natural Gas again, and to my surprise, was told that they in fact service my address (again, another story of its own) - and scheduled me for Monday...there was no way to get someone to my residence until MONDAY. So Friday morning we woke up to 63 degrees...Saturday morning we woke up to 53 degrees...Sunday morning we woke up to 57 degrees...and Monday morning we woke up to 59 degrees. We had to layer up INSIDE our homes, as if we were outside. We have only had to use our heater twice since, because the weather has been in the 70's (both inside and outside my home). All because ARP didn't know their product!
