  • Let me first start out by saying my initial first impression of this hospital was good. We toured the labor and delivery wing weeks before my due date. I asked all the questions and every answer was too good to be true. They will say they are advocates for mother/baby bonding time, they say they are advocates for breastfeeding, the will say they are accommodating for your birth plan. BEWARE. When you're giving birth the game changes. I'm hesitant to share the intimate details of my traumatizing birth experience but had known then what I know now I would have paid ANY amount of money to avoid this hospital. Maybe I can save you from making the same mistakes. I did my homework. Long before I got pregnant I knew I wanted to avoid some things. I wanted as close to a natural experience as possible. I had back labor. I was in pain that was beyond my skillset to manage. I'm not writing a negative review because I didn't get the birth I wanted I'm sharing because 90% of the staff we encountered treated me poorly. They were not properly staffed to handle delivering 15 babies in one day. That doesn't excuse their actions. Complaint #1 no blankets for myself or my husband for an entire 24 hours #2 no additional pillows until 30 hours in. I realize this isn't a hotel but for gods sake. #3 I asked for water I got a tiny triangle cup with a bendy straw. I'm a first time mom, gonna be here a while. You might want to bring a camel pack. #4 After laboring for 8 hours with 2 min contractions and enduring back labor I was told if I didn't want pain medication I could go home and labor there. #5 my nurse insisted I get pitocin or else I would end up with a C Section. DO NOT fall for their bullying scare tactics. Their mission is to deliver you as fast as possible. I felt like cattle. #6 I declined an IV initially. My nurse was not happy about this. There was no reason to give me fluids for 35 hours. #7 at the shift change of anesthesiologists the second Dr changed the type of medication. It proceeded to fail. He then placed blame on the original Dr. Passing the buck is unprofessional. #8 the "on call" Dr who delivered me walked in after I could already see my sons head at this point we are introducing ourselves and I'm asking if he knows the details of my birth plan. Not an ideal time for a conversation. He then proceeded to argue every point of my wishes. I didn't ask for anything crazy. I wanted delayed cord clamping, I wanted my husband to cut the cord, I wanted to pull my son out after his head and shoulders were out and I wanted everything to be done ON ME. So our first hour of bonding was uninterrupted. I also asked that he make sure my placenta was unharmed. I wanted to take it home. He acted like I was the first person to ever ask for this. It doesn't matter why I want it. ITS MINE. If I want to plant it in my backyard it's none of his business. The Dr didn't allow anything except my husband cutting the cord which I still had to ask for, My son was born at 3:02 by 3:48 I started crying and demanded my baby. They took over 40 min doing stuff to him in the bassinet away from me. After the delivery team left my room was getting cleaned a nurse said verbatim "you need to get his body temp up or he's going under the heat lamp for 10 minutes then to the NICU". I said I would warm him up so I got him under the covers and cuddled him. Their form of communication is an order followed with a threat of the NICU. I don't think this is an appropriate way to talk to a new mom or anyone. By 11 am another nurse measured my sons glucose and it was one point below where she wanted it. She said I had 10 min to breastfeed him or she was giving him formula and he was going to the NICU. Then she proceeded to stand over me. He just learned how to breastfeed a few hours ago. It took a good two hours to get his latch down. Demanding a new mom latch on command and feed in 10 is ridiculous. Several times throughout the next two days nurses wanted to take him for tests. I insisted they do everything in our room. I was in the hospital from 8:30 Monday night until I delivered Wednesday 3 am. I wasn't offered any food (until late morning Wednesday) and had to ask for water. Bring your own food. Theirs isn't worth waiting 38 hours for. My best advice if you are having a hospital birth is hire a doula or birthing coach. Everyone needs an advocate. Even the best advocate will not save you from their staff of bullies and negligent, rude individuals.
