| - This buffet is brand spankin' new in Vegas, so naturally everyone is curious and it's a bit hyped up right now. The long lines right now are no joke, but it's a little misleading, as they tend to slow things down as you get closer to the cashier -- they don't want a bunch of people clogging up the front area to get seated.
I consider myself a Vegas buffet veteran, as I've tried just about every one. The first thing one should know is that it's a bit difficult to compare each and every buffet out there. Each one has its pros and cons, it's own inconsistencies, and nuances. It all depends on what you like. Rating buffets is very subjective, to say the least.
That being said, I thought the new buffet at Caesar's was okay, nothing earth shattering in terms of Vegas buffets. I'm going to judge a buffet mostly by its seafood, meat, and dessert. Here's my breakdown:
Seafood -- they offer pre-cut, cold king crab legs. However, upon request, they will steam a plate of crab legs for a few minutes. This inevitably holds up the line longer than it should, because it seems like most people don't get out of the way while they're waiting. I got my fair share (and money's worth) of king crab, but it tasted rather bland even with the melted butter -- the snow crab legs had a lot more flavor.
The stone claws may look appetizing at first, made famous by Joe's Stone Crab. But once you get into the meat (and that's a big if), the meat inside is dry, crumbly, and flavorless. The tin cans of clam bake, fish entrees, and mussels were all dry, shriveled up, and rather pathetic-looking. Sad face.
Meat -- thankfully, I enjoyed all of their meat options over the seafood. The prime rib was excellent, and the brisket was actually good. Smoky and reasonably flavorful, with a nice bark. They don't slice against the grain, so it can get a bit chewy.
Dessert -- thumbs up for the dessert crepe station and the great gelato flavors. Everything else was just so-so. The cheesecake and dessert on a stick may look cute, but it just didn't have much flavor. Overall, I thought dessert options were rather limited.
As for the other food options, I thought everything was just okay. The thing with buffets is that a lot of food just sits out in the open -- getting its life slowly sucked out. As we all know, food is at its best when it's pipin' hot and freshly made. So food like dim sum, sushi, and other of these delicate dishes all suffer as a result.
None of the dishes are anything original, but where this buffet stands out are things like the cheeses and the charcuterie spread. The problem is, will people eat this at a buffet? Each time I walked by, nobody was even remotely slowing down to put some on their plate. Mostly everyone will be stuffing themselves with meat, seafood, and dessert.
I was torn between 3 or 4 stars, but I'll go with 4 stars because this buffet does offer some unique options, king crab legs (which is crazy expensive, so we'll see how long that lasts) and a good meat station. So if you're a fan of Vegas buffets, it's worth a shot. Whether you return for a repeat visit remains to be seen.
