  • Interesting how some reviews of this place talk about the owner being unfriendly. I haven't found that to be true. I've been here a LOT. It's a unique little shop with lots of nice surprises if you're willing to take the time and look around at the finer details. So why ya'll pickin' on the manager?! I suppose you've found nothing but stellar service from stressed college student clerks at the massive chains like Barnes and Noble. I highly doubt it. And Dave B.: Really? 'This place stinks'? How utterly useless. That's not even a review. It's an idiotic outburst from the equivalent of a 4th grader shooting spitwads from the back of the classroom because he's starved for attention. I think we oughtta' review your bathroom...or your hamper... or your stinky attitude. Please find the nearest Yelp Exit and use it. And please go see the Principal for detention. ...back to Bard's... It's a used bookstore, folks, it's not a swap meet or a third world trade outpost. This guy has to make a living. If a book is used but still in fantastic shape, it's ok for them to ask more than a $1.00 for it. They have a ton of reasonably priced books....and lots of other goodies...like old photos to buy, vintage greeting cards, miniature books, DVD's, CD's and other cool stuff. The selection is, of course, hit-or-miss because their inventory on a particular topic will vary. That's pretty normal for a used book store. The irony is that he can't give some of the really great books a huge markdown because he does in fact have to compete with the corporate bookstore giants. He's not there to give his sh*t away for free, ya know. As for their operating hours? Well, hey. Mom and Pop stores actually do have the luxury of fudging their hours by 10 or 15 minutes if they want. It's an unwritten rule. You're just gonna have to deal. Just because Barnes and Noble will promise to stay open til 10 and you rush in at 9:58p after Zumba class to buy the latest Oprah Book Club selection doesn't mean every business is gonna do that. Deal. I stand by this place. I've always had friendly service, always walked out with a book (or two), always say hi to their pet goldfish, and have never had a "stinky" experience there. More people should visit and find out for themselves (insert Reading Rainbow "you don't have to take MY word for it" tag + music). It' a great local find, and with some exploring, you'll probably find something you really like. Places like this need to stay alive. Barnes and Noble can suck it for now. In fact, if you're a big supporter of 'local', you can have a veritable LOCAL ORGY-TASTIC EXPERIENCE because after buying a book, you can get coffee at Urban Bean (30 feet away!) and maybe some Schreiner's Sausage right across the street (been there 56 years!!!) to fry up for your sweetheart. Just sayin'....
