  • I ran across an article saying that the Lionel Train company had moved it's headquarters to Concord, NC. I like trains so we decided to visit the "retail store" located within their warehouse. I'd like to tell you that it's a wonder inside, but I can't. First you arrive to a generic office building that's in no way marked for visitors. No visitor parking signs, no big welcoming sign on the door to alert you of the entrance for the store, nothing. Sure, there's a big sign for the company itself at the road, but there are also different doors to choose from so it's confusing for someone that's never been there before. There's nothing welcoming about the exterior which was disappointing to me. When you walk inside you're alone in a small lobby area with a small train display and two doors. The store is to the right, so we went in. The retail area is far smaller than we'd anticipated, and there was only one train display in the middle of the room. It did have three different trains running on it and it was well done, but again, extremely small and underwhelming considering Lionel's extensive train history. There were two males working in the store that both looked surprised by our arrival then immediately bored by our presence. It felt very much like they're not accustomed to having actual visitors in the retail store. (Gee- that might be because nobody knows you're in Concord, guys.) The older man disappeared into the back and the younger man just stood behind the counter looking bored. He spoke in a very mono-toned voice and even then only when spoken to or asked a question. Again- not at all the enthusiasm I was expecting in a RETAIL / SALES environment. We left not purchasing anything because frankly I felt like we were somewhere that we weren't welcome so we left quickly. The place felt so off to me that I forgot to take any pictures so had to go back inside to snap a couple for my friend that loves Lionel trains. My advice would be to skip this stop entirely... it's SO not worth getting off the exit for :-(
