| - Joy in the Harvest is one of those Gravenhurst Farmers Market vendors for whom we rise early and make the 45-minute boat ride across the lakes every Wednesday we're in Muskoka. The Slyfield family, who runs the business, makes some mean chutneys, BBQ sauces, jerk, and small bites, all infused with a Caribbean flair.
I love their mango chutney. It's some of the chunkiest, stickiest, tastiest mango chutney I've come across. Whatever I add it to at home is instantly enhanced: as a condiment it elevates sandwiches to another level. And it adds heat, spice, and sweetness to dipping sauces or as a topping on mulligatawny. They also make a wonderful jerk sauce with clean, true flavors. The scotch bonnet provides a good burn and the allspice sings. Joy in the Harvest BBQ sauces are wonderful, too. Incredibly smooth, tangy, and sweet.
Most unusual, however, and one of our favorite items to stock up on at Joy in the Harvest are their Coconut Drops. Three ingredients, that's it: coconut, ginger, and brown sugar. But they come together in such a perfect harmony of flavors and textures it's mind-boggling. Coconut is match-sticked and then tossed with a simple syrup of ginger and brown sugar, resulting in a praline-like candy (but so much more complex and flavorful), with the heat from the ginger and the chew from the coconut. Insanely addictive!
Joy in the Harvest products are all-natural, hand-made in small batches, and a steal for what they are. Supposedly the Slyfields are working on a website through which you'll soon be able to order the products, altho this summer patriarch Calvin told us they already ship and have sent Coconut Drops and jerk sauce around the world from France to Dubai. Until the website's up and running, we'll just continue to stock up each summer in Gravenhurst.
