By far the best hike in the Las Vegas area.
This is a moderately difficult hike. Not for newbs but you don't need to be an expert either. It's a clear, easy-to-follow trail--no expert navigational skills required. You'll need some upper body strength for grappling and some decent shoes that can handle slippery rocks. This is one for the fall/winter or spring during cool temps. They shut down the trail during summer time due to extreme temperatures. It's closed now but will reopen in September.
You'll start the hike on sand & gravel which will take you near the highway. You'll see the site of a car that ran off the freeway which now takes permanent residence on the hill. You'll venture onwards. The hike is essentially a wash that drains into the Colorado river. You'll come across a few obstacles down the way. There are existing ropes--all of which seem to be in relatively good condition--to assist you in grappling down steep drops & boulders. Just FYI, going down is easier than going back up. Also, once your shoes are wet, it will be that much harder to keep a good grip on the rock. You'll likely get some bumps and bruises from these.
There are some hot springs along the way. Many people bring their suits with them to soak and chill. If you pass them, you'll make it to the Colorado River where you can get to a nice big rock and relax with a view.
There are a lot of puddles along the way and many oppportunities to get your shoes soaked. Next time I go, I'll probably rock a pair of hiking sandals. The wet sock is extremely unpleasant. Also, you may need to walk through knee-to-waist high water once you get to the river to get to the kickback rock.
I highly recommend this to anyone who loves to hike. It's a refreshing change from Red Rock--that's for sure.
Recommendations: Gloves for grappling, water shoes (hiking sandals) or hiking shoes (or at least trainers w/ a good grip)
