  • Flashback: Me in the late 80s in a little velour sweatsuit and a bowl cut getting herded into the old ROM with a hundred other GTA school kids and peeing my pants in excitement over the dinosaur exhibit. Now flash forward to my return to the ROM in my mid 20s and peeing my pants over the gorgeous crystalline architecture, Damien Hirst- like avian exhibits and angular stairwells. Granted, I understand why people want to hate on the museum in its current state: Yes, it's a tad pricey, no, it's not the Natural History Museum in LA or New York, and no, I would not expect tourists to see it as a fulfilling tourist destination. But the ROM should still be celebrated for what it is: the cutting edge of modern Canadian architecture, and an innovative specimen of modern convention in exhibit design.
