| - I went here today for a regular trim. I usually get my hair cut from another place, though it can be expensive so I decided since it was a simple trim, it couldn't be too hard to mess up.
The trim itself is okay. It is a little bit uneven, but I'm not too bothered by it. Elizabeth also gave a really good head massage as she was washing my hair. She was also really nice, and despite the language barrier she attempted her best to communicate.
However these are some of the problems that occurred during my experience there:
- Instead of going around the chair to cut my hair, she just spun the chair around and stood in one place. This was okay until she spun in direction facing the Walmart checkouts, and people were staring at me.
- She was really, really, rough in combing my hair. She was pulling and yanking on it and it really hurt... I had tears in my eyes!
- She kept having to ask her manager on how to style my hair (I wanted it blow-dried and straightened after, which isn't too hard)
- The manager (not sure of her name) was really rude. She made me wait 20 minutes while she went to the dollar store near Walmart, and in the end she didn't even cut my hair, despite the fact she seemed more experienced and was available. She didn't even offer me a chair, while I waited, and rather told me to go look around Walmart.
- When I was paying for the service, the manager told Elizabeth to charge me extra, as it took a long time. However, I believe that I shouldn't have been charged extra as my hair is fairly short (up to my shoulders) and length in time was due to the stylist taking her time, and constantly asking the manager about how to do my hair. I ended up paying about $50, which is pretty bad considering that this is supposed to be a discount hair salon in Walmart. I didn't object as I didn't want to get Elizabeth in trouble (the manager was rude and passive aggressively condescending towards her the entire time I was there.)
- Markham is multicultural city. In the time that I was there (about two hours) I noticed that the manager only provided services to Caucasian clients, and had everyone else (including me) wait for Elizabeth.
All in all, I would definitely get my hair cut by Elizabeth again. However, due to my experience there I definitely won't be going back to Smart Style.
