  • I was trying to close on my first house. At the 11th hour my lender required a tax transcript be digitally sent from the IRS. I freaked out!! I went to the IRS taxpayer assistance center with little hope of success, but it was to be my final Hail Mary attempt at making my deal work out, so there was nothing left to do but to just go and have faith. I arrived easily enough to the huge building and was met at the door by a small woman who I would later come to know as Mrs. Phyllis. She was so calm and pleasant despite my shaky hands, teary eyes and trembly voice. I explained what I needed and tried to convey the urgentcy of my request all while Mrs. Phyllis nodded and smiled and told me to wait in the OVERFLOW waiting area for the taxpayer assistance center. Oh my god... the "overflow" waiting area? "This will never work...", I thought. but at that point, all I had was time and determination so I sat there, feeling utterly dejected. To my delight they took groups of around 10 into the taxpayer assistance office at a time. I then got in another line and stood there for what seemed like hours with all the other people that needed help with this or that awful tax related mess. I just kept trying to remain calm, take deep breaths and remember that these people were being paid to help me if they could. When it was my turn at the desk another lady that seemed to know every answer to every question asked me what I needed and I told her as quickly and efficiently as I could. I looked her in her eyes and tried to politely but seriously convey how important this day was for me and how much I needed any help she could give to me. She swept into action, looking into her screen (that might as well have been a crystal ball at that point - LOL) and said she saw the issue and asked for my ID. She got up and told me to have a seat. A few minutes later she came and handed me a copy of the exact thing I needed and a fax confirmation showing that it went through successfully. I wasn't 100% sure it would be accepted by my lender, but I was positive that it would show that I was at the very least REALLY trying to lean in and do my part to get this deal finalized. I thanked her and drove back to work hoping that my hours spent there would be enough. I found out the next morning that it was in fact accepted and that my deal would close later that evening. Mrs. Phyllis and the other kind lady at the tax payer assistance center were the pivotal pieces in getting me into my first home, my deal would not have gone through without their assistance... It was a process, but in the end I did get what I needed from the IRS and I'm thankful to them for their help :-)
