  • If it were legal to live in a bar, this would be the one I would choose. I was here every chance I got in undergrad, when I lived a stone's throw from Coventry. Now, it is a special trip for me but still worth the effort. I first heard talk of La Cave from a sorority sister, one that I sort of idolized. She was an amazing violinist and english major, one of those people that just oozes bohemian nonchalance. She was like a big sister to me, and always promised to take me to La Cave when I turned 21. From her reverence of the place, I was in awe before I ever set foot in La Cave. She spoke of dark, candlelit tables, the cavelike feel of the place, the cheese plates, the wine list. Fast forward three years, and I became a regular, attending with any of my friends who didn't see the fun in drinking at just any old bar with loud, crappy music and underdressed, underage women. La Cave is a good place to go if you want to like wine, but are confused by all the varieties and regions. All you have to do is ask a bartender and they will briefly quiz you on your preferences before procuring the perfect wine for your tastes. I discovered my Holy Grail of wines here, a surprising white when I typically drank red! I also learned at this establishment that red wine from Chile and Argentina is less expensive, but just as full-bodied as many French and Californian varieties. Easy on the wallet and the taste buds! Their cheese plates are incredible-expensive, but perfectly crafted. Yes, crafted. All of the cheeses play well off each other, and the various boards are served with cured meats (the beer board), dried apricots, cranberries, and fresh grapes. A wonderful experience with a glass of wine or beer. The beers are lovingly poured into matching glassware-it seems as though they have glasses for every type of beer they serve! I am always impressed by this, even as a non-beer drinker. Their beer cooler takes up a whole wall, and I love looking at all the microbrews, the labels, and the varieties of beers, even though I always order wine. And oh, what a wine list! It's a thing of beauty, separated by region and type. It is very easy to peruse and quickly narrow down what you're looking for. This place is perfect for a date-the entire experience is a seduction of the senses. Though I have also been here many nights with larger groups-laughing and talking until they kick us out the door at closing time. I wish I could keep a La Cave in my pocket and bring it wherever I am living.
