| - Having lived in Belgium for nearly three years, I assure you this is not in the least an accurate representation of the food. There is no semblance, actually.
The only common ground here is the surly wait staff. Belgium, being a largely French culture, does not pride itself in its service. As tipping is not the norm in many European countries, Belgians to not see the need to go beyond their call of duty in this regard. However, what's the Canadian excuse here?
First off, the 'restaurant' itself is simply disgusting. It's one thing to be a local hole-in-the-wall weathered down by years of service and steeped in tradition, or to even have a hipster hole-in-the-wall facade, but it's completely another to open an actual hole-in-the-wall. I don't want to throw this word carelessly but it struck me as an unhygienic sort of place.
Now onto the food: although Brussels-style waffles are not as sweet as the street variety, Good Eten's were dry and flavourless, accompanied by sad-looking toppings; the Bicki burger (sic) was served on a soggy ciabatta bun; and the cheese croquettes contained an unidentifiable mixture involving blue cheese.
The only nod to reality were the frites, which although greasy, tasted somewhat authentic.
BIG disappointment.
