| - It's a monolith.
It's also one of the best community centres in Peel.
Going up to Gore Meadows, I didn't quite know what to expect, but the sheer size of this place floored me.
Located at the very northern edge of Brampton, right near Caledon, this place is easily as wide as two city blocks, with the facilities and service to match. One of the biggest single-floor libraries I've ever seen, coupled with multiple meeting rooms, exercise areas and long sprawling hallways added up to one of the nicest places I've been to in a long, long time.
I came here for an NDP rally for a candidate who was running in Brampton-East, and the first thing I was glad to see is that the parking lot was built with huge crowds in mind. Easy to access, easy to get in and out of, multiple entry and exit points - perfect.
A review on this page mentioned that the library was noisy and too congested (a jungle, really?), but had they bothered to go to nearly any other library in the city, they would see that this place is an oasis. Wide pathways with segmented study rooms (where was that person studying, anyway?), plus plenty of comfy chairs and window seats amid tens of thousands of books, with plenty of new releases on display. Maybe the sheer size of the place intimidates some people, but for the time I went (a Monday weeknight), it was remarkably sedate.
The staff were also very friendly and helped my group get where they needed to go instantly. Technicians were also on-hand to help get some of the PA kinks in the rally area worked out, and they had enough room for members of the media to set-up and show their cameras. I became aware that some media personnel showed up a bit late and got a bit salty when they couldn't get a desired position (I'm looking at you, CityTV), but that's just the nature of the business.
(I suppose I can't be too harsh on City - they apparently have footage of me shaking Jagmeet Singh's hand after the rally, so I'll give them a pass. THIS TIME.)
This place has me so spoiled that I find myself wishing south Mississauga had a monolithic community centre like Gore Meadows, because the facilities we do have down here seem woefully inadequate in comparison. That's not even getting into all the programs and activities they have on offer here.
If you're up in the north end of Brampton, it's definitely worth visiting this place at least once. Even the outside views of the site are enough to justify the trip - the beautiful interior and impressive selection of services is the icing on the cake.
