| - I've been a member here for five years, through three managers. It's always been the No-Frills of Toronto gyms, most of the folks here are years-loyal regulars who are here to work HARD and aren't so much into fancy soaps and steam rooms. It's the workout room you'd have in your unfinished basement (if you didn't live in a condo.)
The current manager, Angelo, is the best they've ever had, and is doing his very best to manage the place through a significant loss of square footage - no fault of their own to have lost it - and to keep the cardio area up and running and refreshed without raising member fees.
I pay today what I paid in 2005. Pretty rad.
Lots Of Cybex and nautilus, tons and tons of freeweights. Small cardio theatre - this is a weightlifters gym - but I'm an hour a day cardio girl and it's always served me just fine.
Boxers are all consistent die-hards and seem to love what they are doing up there making all that noise.
Trainer Farah Merchant runs body-pump style classes on Tues-Wed at 6 and cares about her students like they were dear friends. Julian Ho runs an athletic conditioning class on Fridays at 6 - and people, Julian is worth the price of membership alone. Believe it. Joannie is Stott Pilates certified and a hoot. I have heard amazing things about the Monday boot camp - the trainer hollers Jillian Michaels style while you work your way through burpees but I am too lazy to let her kick my ass for too long.
To make it short, it's my home, and it would be easy for this place to become home to the right sorts of low-maintenance people. Everyone knows everyone, and it's dependable.
Loses a store for somewhat shoddy showering situation. Clean, but positively crap soap. A few more amenities would go a long way (hair dryer, for instance.)
UPDATE: They've actually changed the soap! Now it smells like watermelons and lathers heaps. Hooray!
