  • 2.5 The stars are for the staff. Whoever recruited/hired the staff at this Aloft is a pro at hir job. Absolutely everyone I encountered was polite, friendly, professional, and accommodating. The staff at this Aloft could teach many hotels on how to make guests feel welcomed and taken care of. Kudos to the awesome staff! That said, everything else about this hotel is a bit of a let down. Yes, this review is firmly rooted in first-world privilege. With that out of the way, there wasn't a lot about this hotel experience (save the staff) that I'd like to do again. The location of the hotel is in a pretty out of the way (at least, it felt that way) location. I know locals chimed in over and over again about it being in the middle of the 'entertainment district.' I think I have a different definition of that phrase. For me, the location was a bit lonely and desolate. I hadn't been to Phoenix in years* and being here I didn't feel connected to the pulse of the city at all. I've read that this is a converted property. It feels that way. The layout is a bit odd and the room is pretty sterile. Between the design, concrete (not polished) floors, terrible (very very dark) lighting, and color scheme, the prison chic feel became too much to bear. I never felt comfortable in the room. The bed was comfortable and the shower had good pressure but... my cortisol** levels kept rising. There was nothing soothing about the room. I couldn't even open my blinds, as my room peered in to the adjacent condo complex. The surrounding building neighbors have a penchant for thumping bass and fire alarms. You'll hear a lot of both. The room is clean and I never felt in danger but I didn't enjoy spending time there. It was uncomfortable. The thin wall situation is real. People mention it. Believe it. You'll know your neighbors' coming and going. They'll know yours. You'll know your neighbors' TV habits. They'll know yours. You'll know your neighbors' morning and night routines. They'll know yours. You'll hear sounds you won't want to hear. Your neighbors will hear the same. This is bad enough with strangers. When surrounded by co-workers, it's intolerable. This was, easily, the worst part about staying here and greatly added to the discomfort. I wouldn't stay here again. *I know this is Scottsdale. **First-world.
