I am not sure who gave this place five stars but I suspect it's one of the owners. If so, I hope you read my post. This place is frustrating the hell out of me. I live in the neighbourhood and am eager to have a place near us that I could just casually stroll to go to dinner but I have no idea if The Independent is it or not. For weeks the windows were covered and many many signs were up announcing a new restaurant opening soon. An impressive high endish menu adorned the window announcing buffalo burgers and $18.00 - $22.00 impressive main dishes. My wife and I eagerly awaited this new place. The paper came down and nothing had changed. It still looks like the three failed sports pubs that had been there before. No ambiance. None. Also, I don't know when it's open. I have walked by in the morning, afternoon, night and I never see it open. Ever heard of posting your hours? Try it. Also, If you are going to have a higher end menu on par with the Rushton or any other place on the Ossington strip, a menu that says "hey, come here for a nice dinner or drink with a romantic friend or collegue you have to offer some ambiance or that can compete with those joints. The Independent looks like I'm sorry to say A DUMP. No style not even a shabby chic, It just looks BLAH! So, I don't know when you are open, I look in the window as I go by and see a dying plant and no style within....I don't know what this place is or wants to be but someone better put some thought and effort into making it attractive if it wants to last. And again post your hours of operation. Oh and maybe since your in a family neighbourhood try a brunch menu. Do something or wave bye bye real soon
