| - Penn Mac was really my first experience of an Italian influenced "wholesale" store that many larger cities have. I don't have a hard time justifying a special trip here, all it means is a healthy 20 minute bike ride up and down a fun hill. The prices really are hard to beat, you will quickly find a list of things you get here for half the price you do at Whole Foods, Giant Eagle or even Trader Joe's for some things. (My almost-half-price list currently includes: dried pasta, dried beans, olives, capers, olive oil, tahini, spices, most produce, tiramisu ingredients and most nicer cheeses.)
I will reiterate that if you go on a weekend (doesn't even have to be before a holiday or nice weather) you will be waiting outside for a bit before you even get to enter the store, much less take a number at the cheese counter.
Oh yeah, the employees might not ask you if you need help but they are more than willing to do so when asked.
