| - From our home in Shaker Heights, we can reach 7 High-End Supermarkets (Heinen's, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's) + the North Union Farmer's Market - all within a 10-minute drive! The options are so plentiful that we have come to utilize each of those store for the things that they deliver best.
In the case of Fresh Market, here are the attributes and offerings that they offer equal to or above the others:
- MOOD! The Fresh Market is almost never crowded and almost always serenely quiet. Classical music plays at a pleasantly low din. They keep the overhead lighting at a romantically dim level, with art lighting that illuminates the produce. I really appreciate the extra thought and planning that went into this because it really uplifts your experience!
- BULK! While we will go to Whole Foods for our bulk grains and spices, Fresh Market has a selection of bulk Sweets and Snacks that is perfect for entertaining - or merely delighting your inner child. I almost always leave with a small bag of dark-chocolate-covered pretzels!
- GOURMET! Their well-curated selection of Gourmet specialty items (jams, vinegars, oils, cheeses, bottled beverages) and their Wine and Beer selection make this a great stop for a hostess gift or contribution to a dinner party.
Other aspects that I enjoy: While the prices at Fresh Market are higher than some other stores, their store-brand items are usually a really good deal. Their store-brand coffee is our at-home go-to. Also, the service is always very, very friendly!
Where FM falls down is in their selection, which can be limited. The quality of their meat counter and prepared foods is merely average - no better than a Giant Eagle. I never purchase those items. Also, I would love it if they made an effort to offer some produce by local growers; all of the produce here is from California or abroad, which is a sticking point for me. We only rarely purchase produce here.
