4 stars for being original, well produced, relatability and cost effective. Minus 1 star for all the kids. Since when does bringing a crying infant to a show make sense?
I was happy to finally get the chance to check out Circus 1903 after all the promotions and newspaper write ups. I was expecting a circus with midway acts and a ringmaster and thats pretty much what they delivered. This show has the atmosphere of Absinthe, the orginality of a Cirque show (when they first started) and the audience appeal of a 4pm family magic show. A midday afternoon show because there were a lot of kids in the audience. A lot. This is one of those shows were clapping is encouraged and if you were the guy sitting next to me a constant "wooooo", which came annoying half way through the show. Nevertheless, this show has what Cirque has slowly been lacking- originality and concise execution. Everything with Cirque is all hubris, bigger is better and a storyline that leaves you scratching your head. The premise of this show is singular and easy to understand for all audiences and they actually have a diverse cast of performers.
I did think the gimmick of the elephants could have been a bit more interesting. Still it was pretty innovative and id see it again.
