We live in a cynical time, but people can still surprise you.
I bought my mother a gift certificate for her favorite restaurant for mothers day, but she was never able to use it. I called them today and asked if I could use it for some to-go food for her funeral reception. The owner talked to me on the phone for 30 minutes, she remembered my mother and was incredibly gracious and sincere. She called me back a few minutes ago after talking to the Chef and offered to make a lasagna for the family after the reception. They want my son to come in to pick it up so they can tell him how to cook it.
Maybe I'm a little emotional right now, but this gave me an immense feeling of joy and appreciation. The restaurant business can be a wonderful thing when it remembers that its about relationships and community. I only ate at this place once with my mom, but its my favorite restaurant in the world right now...
